Where a WAF sits and what it sees
A WAF works with application-layer requests. A service in front of a website can evaluate requests before allowing them to reach the origin, while other deployments place filtering closer to the application. The exact inspection and controls depend on the provider and configuration. Draw the path from visitor to application before deciding what the filter protects.
A visible provider logo or a configured DNS record is not enough to prove coverage. Check which hostnames and protocols traverse the service and whether an origin or alternate hostname can be reached by another route. The goal is to identify the actual boundary, with authorized checks, rather than assume every system sharing the domain receives the same protection.
Rules turn request signals into handling decisions
A request may match a managed rule for a known attack pattern or a business-specific condition. Depending on the product and configuration, handling can include observation, a challenge or blocking. A matched rule is a signal about a request; it is not automatically proof that a person is malicious or that the application would have been exploitable.
Review the requested path, method, time, rule identifier and action together. Retain only the data needed for the investigation and avoid publishing request bodies containing customer information. A useful decision record connects an observed match with its business effect and the reason for any configuration change.
| Observation | What it supports | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| A rule blocked a request | That request matched an active handling rule on the observed path. | That every malicious request will be blocked. |
| A checkout action fails after a rule change | A possible false positive needing correlation and reproduction. | That all security rules should be disabled. |
| No recent matches appear | No matches were visible in the selected evidence window. | That the application has no vulnerabilities. |
| The main hostname is filtered | That hostname uses the checked protection path. | That alternate hostnames and origin access are equally covered. |
False positives need a narrow investigation
A false positive occurs when legitimate activity is treated as unwanted. Examples can include an authorized upload, administrative operation or API call that resembles a suspicious pattern. Start with a reproducible business action, the relevant timestamp and the specific request or rule evidence. Do not turn a vague user report into a site-wide bypass.
Prefer the smallest justified change that the provider supports: the affected rule, route and verified condition, with an owner and a review point. Test both the legitimate workflow and the remaining protection. A temporary exception that is never revisited can quietly become a permanent gap.
A WAF is different from other security controls
A network firewall controls traffic at a different level and is not interchangeable with application-request inspection. Anti-DDoS capabilities, rate controls, bot handling and WAF features may coexist in one platform, but their scope, limits and plans differ. A WAF label alone does not establish protection against every denial-of-service scenario.
Filtering also does not substitute for authentication, secure application code, updates, backups or recovery testing. A rule may reduce exposure while an application fix is prepared, but the underlying defect and its possible past impact still need assessment. A site already containing malicious code requires investigation and remediation beyond filtering incoming traffic.
Agree an operational scope before deployment
List hostnames, applications, important business journeys and the people who can authorize changes. Include forms, payments, webhooks, APIs and administration as applicable. Establish how the team will recognize a broken workflow, inspect available evidence and reverse a problematic change without losing the whole protection boundary.
Provider features, log retention and available controls vary. Do not promise the same visibility for every subscription or assume that encrypted or unobserved traffic is inspected. A handover should identify what is enabled, what was tested and what the business must continue to maintain.
What a useful WAF review delivers
Ask for the protection path, material configuration findings, a record of tested business actions and any exceptions with their rationale. The conclusion should be specific enough to act on: which hostname, which rule or gap, what change is proposed and how it will be verified. Avoid interpreting a provider dashboard as a complete application-security assessment.
